Data Rights Support

People are not always aware of their rights around their data or the resources and support available to them if they’ve experienced an online harm or had an issue with their data. Working in partnership with local legal centres and national regulators, the agency will offer a one-stop advice service to help people understand what their data rights are when they’ve experienced an online harm or have had digital data shared illegally.

The service can direct people to existing organisations who provide specialist or legal support, with the agency giving relevant knowledge on how best to approach them. The advisors can signpost people to resources, suggest other services offered by the agency, such as Data Counselling, and provide advocacy for people who need legal support or representation, especially if they need to engage with corporations and Big Tech.

Through these appointments, the agency will track the types of online harms being reported to better understand the current landscape and evidence what online harms the government should be better supporting.
