Research Process
Over the last year we have partnered with two community organisations, Amina and Datakirk, who are run by and support people from minority ethnic communities. Together we ran a series of workshops with the aim of developing a series of ‘future services and support’ to help future citizens have better data privacy. Below is an overview of our process which follows three phases:
Phase One
Awareness Building
Exploring what data is, how it is collected and who is collecting it. Understanding personal data trails and exploring how our interactions with digital devices and places create data.

Phase Two
Exploring Future Needs
Using speculative future privacy scenarios, we explored emerging technologies and data governance structures to understand what citizens’ future needs might be.
Phase Three
Co-designing Future Services
Based on the future needs identified in Phase Two, we co-designed a series of services and support for future citizens.

Following the workshops we analysed the research data to reveal insights into the opportunities and challenges the participants had shared around data and data privacy support. We have brought the research findings together to create a fictional service provider called the Citizens Data Agency with five speculative services, that aim to spark conversations around what challenges people may face in the future with their data and what services we might need to support them.
